Cologne

With over a million inhabitants, Cologne is the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and truly a state of mind. The Cathedral (Dom) is a world-famous landmark, and the Rhine is the city's lifeline. But Cologne is much more than tourism and Carnival: As a media city, it is home to major broadcasters and publishers, creating a creative and communicative atmosphere.

For students and researchers, Cologne offers an enormous density of opportunities. The city is cosmopolitan, tolerant, and perfectly connected via the ICE hub and airport. Hierarchies are often flatter, and exchange is more direct—fostering interdisciplinary networks that are particularly strong in Cologne's scientific landscape.

The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Germany. As a University of Excellence, it plays in the top tier, especially with its Clusters of Excellence in aging research (CECAD) and plant sciences (CEPLAS). The Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences also enjoys an outstanding international reputation.

Unique is the German Sport University Cologne, the largest of its kind in Europe. Technologically, TH Köln—Germany's largest University of Applied Sciences—sets standards in applied research ("Technology, Arts, Sciences").

Another highlight is the German Aerospace Center (DLR), headquartered in Cologne-Porz. Here, astronauts train at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC). This portfolio is complemented by four Max Planck Institutes (including Biology of Ageing and the Study of Societies).
